Days 6-8: Udaipur

Udaipur was the next place we visited. I'll skip the bus ride there, because I'd prefer to forget it! We immediately noticed a shift in attitude and atmosphere in Udaipur - it was a lot more relaxed than the other places we've been. It's a smaller city, with two big lakes, a pretty palace, a stone temple, some posh hotels and resorts on and near the lake, an old palace on a mountaintop overlooking the city and surrounding countryside, lots of shops selling practically everything, folk dance performances, cooking classes, massage centers....all very tourist-friendly, but not too tacky or overbearing. Our guesthouse was a breezy and friendly 5-story open courtyard home. We made some friends in Udaipur and loved the change of pace.

  1. Lovely guest house! Poor cows! Is that your hand? Tell us about the red dot? And, definitely need to hear about the bus ride! Don't tell me... you got proposed to again!
Heard from our weekend visitor that the food everywhere (she's been there 17 times) is hot, hot, hot!

  2. yeah, the guesthouse was nice.
why poor cows? they are royalty (well, deity) here! i took the pic because i thought the blue horns were cool. they're painted in preparation for the diwali festival.
yep, that's my hand. remind me to send you pic of what the henna looked like when it was all finished and dry.
The red dot is called "bindi" - it was traditionally a sign of good luck, mainly for women after marriage, but now it's just a fashion thing. That one was stick-on, given to all the girls by Shashi, the sweet woman who taught our cooking class.

Very mysterious..who was your weekend visitor?
Most of the food's not very spicy, actually. It's delicious!!!! I'm going to be making a lot of curry and naan in Beijing! :)
